History of Shijira-ori

About Awa Shijira-ori
Shijira fabric has beautiful wavy crepe and brings us a cool feeling. Shijira means wavy fine crepe on the surface of fabric. The fabric is woven using the difference of yarn’s tension, and soaked in hot water. This procedure creates crepe on Shijira fabric. Since it has smooth texture and refreshing feeling, it has been popular as summer kimono fabric for a long time. Shijira fabric woven with yarn which is dyed with indigo (from Tokushima) is called Awa Shoai Shijira-ori.
Awa Shijira fabric was devised in the end of Edo period by a woman, Hana Kaifu who lived in a village in the domain of Awa (Tokushima as it is). In summer, 1867, Hana left woven fabric outside. Unfortunately, it showered and the fabric got soaking wet. After the rain, the fabric caught scorching sunshine that changed its surface uneven. Hana disappointed in what happened to fabric because it was for sale. At the same time, she found beauty in the fabric with uneven surface, and felt comfortable texture. In 1969, Awa Shijira fabric was finished after repeated challenging to create crepe on the surface of entire fabric evenly.
